A woman and her dog escaped injury this morning as fire tore through her century farmhouse on Tremaine Road in Milton.
Milton Fire Department deputy chief Dave Pratt said firefighters received a 9-1-1 call from the homeowner just before 6:30 a.m.
When they arrived at 5116 Tremaine Rd., they found fire raging out of the side of the house, Pratt said.
Two hours later, they were still battling hot spots and it appears that the house is destroyed.
“Crews tried to do a quick knockdown, but unfortunately, it’s a century farmhouse and it’s got plaster and voids in the walls, so unfortunately fire got in the walls and made its way to the second floor, and now we’re trying to make sure it’s not in the attic,” he told the Champion just after 8 this morning. “We’re trying to make sure there’s no extension, but you can still see wisps of smoke every now and again.”
Pratt said it’s too early to determine the cause of the blaze, but the homeowner did say she had had a fire in the fireplace the evening before.
“The interior is bad, part of the floor is burned through on the second floor in one of the rear bedrooms,” he said. “There’s lots of smoke and water damage.”
Halton police closed Tremaine Road to traffic between Lower Base Line and Louis St. Laurent Avenue this morning.
There were more than 40 firefighters on the scene working, Pratt said, adding “It was cold, but not as cold as it has been lately and with lots of staff on scene, we’ve been able to rotate through them.”
No injuries were reported.
