A Milton dancer is among thousands who will dance in a prestigious championship that’s in Canada for the first time.

Paige Mackintosh, one of 14 dancers from Oakville-based Goggin-Carroll School of Irish Dance, qualified to compete at the World Irish Dance Championships, running March 29 to April 5 at Palais des Congrès de Montréal.

To help fund the dancers, the school is holding the Claddagh Ball at the Burlington Convention Centre on Saturday, March 7. It features food, dancing, performances and a silent auction. For tickets and more details, contact Barb Goggin at dance@goggin-carroll.com.

The World Irish Dance Championships has been in existence since 1970, although Irish dancing has been most popular since the dawn of Riverdance in the mid-90s.

Until 2000, the prestigious World Irish Dance Championships was never held outside the 26 counties of Ireland. Since then, it has been held in Belfast, Glasgow, London, Philadelphia and Boston, but never in Canada — until now.

At the end of March, more than 4,000 dancers and 20,000 family and friends will descend on Montreal to compete in the World Irish Dance Championships. Competitors will come from the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Great Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and across Canada. They will showcase years of hard work at the “olympics” of world dance.

Milton’s Mackintosh began dancing when she was six years old, and started competing by the age of seven. She has qualified for the world championships three times and is currently eighth in her region, according to her instructors.
