Two-time Juno Award-nominated singer Tanya Tagaq will be the guest speaker at The Dinner Party.
The dinner, hosted by the Women of Halton Action Movement (WHAM) and the Zonta Club of Oakville, will be held Wednesday, March 4 at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre.
One of the largest International Women’s Day events in Canada, The Dinner Party is a fundraiser for Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) and Canadians in Support of Afghan Women (CSAW).
The Dinner Party, held to raise awareness of gender equality issues, has fundraised almost $250,000 for the two groups over 12 years.
Tagaq, an Inuk throat singer from Nunavut, was the winner of the 2014 Polaris Music Award, which honours creativity and diversity in Canadian music. She was nominated for Juno Awards in 2006 and 2009 for Aboriginal Recording of the Year and Instrumental Album of the Year.
Tagaq was also named the Globe and Mail’s artist of the year for 2014. She has performed extensively at Canadian folk festivals and collaborated with Bjork.
Tickets cost $55 each and are available by calling SAVIS at 905-825-3622. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar, Afghan market, book sales, 50/50 draw and a silent auction.
