The opening of a new public elementary school in southwest Milton in September will result in some students in the area changing schools.
Following a four-month process of consultation and meetings to consider 18 possible scenarios, a committee set up to study the boundary changes recommended a series of revised school boundaries for the area.
On Wednesday night, trustees with the Halton District School Board unanimously approved those new boundaries for Anne J. MacArthur, Tiger Jeet Singh and the new, yet-unnamed school.
With a planned opening for next September, the new school on Farmstead Drive, south of Louis St. Laurent Avenue, will offer English programming for students in JK to Grade 8.
The new boundaries will allow some grandfathering of students currently attending Tiger Jeet Singh school and living in the area west of Yates Drive and either on or south of Bartleman Terrace.
They are also intended to reduce accommodation pressures at area schools, and balance enrolment across the growing communities.
Milton trustee Donna Danielli thanked board staff for shepherding the process to a smooth and collaborative result.
“Boundary issues have the potential to be controversial, cantankerous and difficult,” she acknowledged.
Detailed school boundaries and enrolment projects for all three schools can be found on the school board’s website, www.hdsb.ca.
