Family Literacy Day is celebrated each year on January 27. To make the most of the two Saturdays that flank this occasion, family-based literacy events have been organized by the Milton Public Library (MPL).
Events will take place at Milton’s main library, with Family Literacy Day on Saturday, Jan. 24 and at the Beaty Branch with the Great Gruffalo Gathering Saturday, Jan. 31.
The Beaty Branch activities are in conjunction with The Gruffalo’s Child presented by the Milton Centre for the Arts on February 21.
MPL have organized the events in celebration of Family Literacy Day, a national event aimed at raising awareness of literacy established in 1999.
The MPL hopes to increase awareness of literacy among all of Milton’s family units — parents, children, grandparents, and other relatives alike.
Scheduled activities are as follows.
January 24 at Main Library, 1010 Main St. E.
• 9:45 and 10:30 a.m. – Rise n’ Shine, a program of stories, songs, dance and rhymes.
• 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – Andrew Larsen, author of In The Tree House and the Charlie books, will show families how to make their own books, filled with stories and illustrations.
Day-long activities: scavenger hunt for older children, finding clues to spell out a message; record a story and read together, and a craft station.
January 31 at Beaty Branch, 945 Fourth Line:
• 2 to 3 p.m., a story, crafts, games and prizes themed around The Gruffalo’s Child, Julia Donaldson’s book.
