Mike Saftic kicked off the autumn series at Woodbine Racetrack Monday in milestone fashion.
Working out a perfect trip with Magic Shelley in the evening’s third race, the 52-year-old driver reached the 5,000-win plateau.
A Sudbury native who now calls Milton home, Saftic began has career in 1981 and has consistently put up solid numbers each season — having driven for such top horses as Hall of Fame pacing mare Ellamony, Armbro Cruiser, Luck Of Michelle and 2002 Metro Pace champion Sir Luck.
He’s earned more than $1 million each year since 1989 and this season has 96 victories for a bankroll just under $2 million.
