Cosimo Lazzarino made an impressive Ontario Junior Hockey League debut Saturday.
The rookie netminder stopped 47 shots, including all 17 he saw in the third period, as the Milton IceHawks held off the Toronto Jr. Canadiens for a 2-1 victory. The victory earned a weekend split for the IceHawks, who were doubled 6-3 by the Georgetown Raiders Sunday.
Despite being outshot 16-8 in the opening period, it was Milton that emerged with a 1-0 lead in Saturday’s game, thanks to Alex Riche’s goal with five minutes remaining in the period.
Andrew Mullen spoiled Lazzarino’s shutout bid early in the second but Jonathan Schaefer’s power-play goal with 1:03 remaining in the second restored Milton’s lead and proved to be the winner.
Riche also had a pair of goals in Sunday’s loss. His second power-play goal of the game put Milton ahead 3-2 midway through the second period, but Georgetown scored four unanswered goals for a 6-3 win.
Mitch Graham had Milton’s other goal while Schaefer had two assists.
Milton, now 2-2 this season, will host a pair of games this week. The Burlington Cougars will be at Memorial Arena for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday while Trenton is in town for a 3:30 p.m. game Sunday.
