The Halton District School Board is looking for someone to fill an upcoming trustee vacancy on its board.
In late May, Milton trustee Nancy MacNeill announced she would be leaving the board in late June as she is moving outside the region, which disqualifies her from sitting as a Halton trustee.
The one-term trustee joined the board in late 2010.
The municipal elections later this year (Oct. 27) will elect a new slate of trustees, but until then the board needs to appoint a short-term replacement trustee for Milton.
The process trustees will follow will be a public one, similar to what has been followed in Halton and at other Ontario school boards.
The Ontario Education Act states (S.221.1) “….If the office of a member of a board becomes vacant before the end of the member’s term:
(a) The remaining elected members shall appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy within 90 days after the office becomes vacant, if a majority of the elected members remain in office; or
(b) A byelection shall be held to fill the vacancy, in the same manner as an election of the board, if a majority of the elected members do not remain in office.”
Interested candidates have to complete an application form, found on the Halton board’s website, and submit it along with a resume and proof of qualification.
Applications will be received by the secretary of the board until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18.
Confirmation of receipt of applications will be sent to the email address indicated on the application form before noon on Friday, June 20.
The email will contain confirmation of qualifications, a list of questions to be asked at the interview and a link to an online scheduling calendar to allow candidates to select an interview time on Monday, June 23.
All qualified applicants will be invited to participate in interviews scheduled from mid-afternoon to early evening on June 23.
Applicants will be interviewed by trustees.
Deliberations also will take place in public.
The successful candidate will be sworn into office during a special public board meeting on Wednesday, July 2.
The appointed trustee will serve with the Halton District School Board until the Oct. 27 municipal election determines a successful candidate for the Dec. 1, 2014-Nov. 30, 2018 term of office.
Candidate qualifications to apply for the trustee vacancy are listed on the application form posted on the board’s website at www.hdsb.ca and are also available in Halton District School Board schools and municipal offices.
