An Ontario trucker has been charged after nearly colliding head-on with a Winnipeg truck driver whose dashboard camera of the incident went viral on YouTube.
Nipigon OPP confirmed Thursday Akmal Hayat, 31, of Milton, Ont., was charged on Wednesday with careless driving, failing to remain and failing to report in connection with the incident on Jan. 4 at about 9:25 a.m.
OPP said the driver of a northbound tractor-trailer unit was coming around a curve on Highway 11, in the RM of Greenstone, when suddenly in the lane in front of him appeared a southbound tractor-trailer unit trying to pass a snowplow truck.
Police said the northbound truck driver swerved to the right side of the road, collided with several guard posts and brought the vehicle to a stop, while the other truck kept heading south on the highway.
The two vehicles didn't collide with each other.
The Winnipeg driver gave police a copy of a video of the incident, which has been seen more than 2.2 million times since it was put on the Internet.
