Milton students had the chance to learn, explore the arts and be inspired by professional artists for the last several weeks.
Their resulting works — impressive quality, showing a definite gift — are on display at the Milton Centre for the Arts Holcim Gallery until March 28. An opening reception was held last night in which the students, aged 13 to 19 years old, and the mentors they were teamed with attended.
Titled Milton Youth Arts Exhibit, the project itself began late last year with a call for students to apply.
Some 40 students participated in the free Youth Arts Mentoring Project, which was the brain-child of the Fine Arts Society of Milton (FASM).
Over four workshop mentoring sessions, the students worked on their art.
Aleesha Coghill, 13, a Grade 8 home-schooled student, was one of the several artists at the opening reception. Her work, titled Technicolour, was proudly displayed. She enjoyed the chance to pursue the arts.
"Art is important to me, because I can express myself through it and there are no limits,” she said. “Thank you FASM for the art Workshops, they were awesome.”
One of the mentors and the co-ordinator of the project, Louise Botha said the works were very stimulating.
“The arts build, bind and support communities,” Botha said. “They are important for both our mental and physical well-being.
“It has been wonderful to create art with the youth of Milton, they have impressed and inspired me."
Students didn’t need to have any previous training or level of artistic skill — simply a passion to explore the arts. The exhibit most definitely shows passion, added Botha.
FASM president Ursula McDermid said the participants were youth, who are interested in pursuing the arts as a career or hobby. She acknowledged and thanked the
Optimist Club of Milton for fully backing the program.
She also thanked Boston Pizza and Veejay at Mr. Sub for their generosity.
Participants covered the costs of materials required to create the work of art.
McDermid explained that the youth learned about art and techniques, while receiving one-on-one mentoring time.
Students also learned how to prepare for a professional exhibition, learning firsthand how an exhibition comes together.
