Halton police say a driving initiative that ran for a month, ending yesterday (March 5), has seen positive results.

Project Viocurus (Latin for Master of the Roads) results point to a significant reduction in personal injury and damage collisions within Milton and Halton Hills, according to Sgt. Paul Rudall, who initiated the project.

Between February 5 and March 5, officers from 1 District proactively targeted the major east-west commuter routes and collision hot spots in both towns, focusing on what Rudall calls the ‘big four’ bad driving behaviours: aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving and failure to wear seatbelts.

There were 11 injuries from collisions in these areas during Project Viocurus — just half the number (22) compared to the same time period last year.

The project had an even bigger impact on property damage collisions, with 186 being reported last year compared to only 81 this time around.

During the project a total of 10 drivers were arrested and charged for impaired driving and 38 drivers were charged with driving while under a suspension.

A total of 1,130 provincial offence notices (tickets) were issued, compared to 949 for the same period last year.

If you suspect that a driver is impaired please treat this as a crime in progress and call 9-1-1.

If anyone wants to report an incident involving dangerous or aggressive driving visit www.hrps.on.ca to file a Road Watch report.
