School pride will be on display at a spring dance.

The Second Annual LGBTQ2 Pride Dance is taking place Thursday, May 21, from 7-10 p.m., at Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School, 3040 Tim Dobbie Dr.

LGBTQ2 represents those people who identify themselves as either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, questioning or two-spirited.

The dance is organized through the secondary school Positive Space clubs throughout the Halton District School Board, which includes teachers, students, administrators, program leaders, support staff, parents and community members.

“This is certainly an example of a promising future when our students are the leaders for social justice and social change,” Yaw Obeng, superintendent of education with the Halton public board, said in a press release.

“We are proud to be supporting this event that promotes inclusion among our student population, and beyond.”

The dance will include a performance by Trevor Copp of the Tottering Biped Theatre, creator of the same-sex ballroom dance show First Dance.

Students from all Halton secondary schools are invited to attend.

Last year’s inaugural pride dance attracted 350 students.

Tickets cost $10 and will be available starting May 1 from high schools and from the Positive Space Network of Halton.

The Positive Space Network’s LGBTQ22+ Youth Action Committee is sponsoring a ‘pay what you can’ ticket price for a limited number of students.
