If there’s one person who can unite local readers, it’s likely Milton native Chris Hadfield — the town’s own astronaut.
The Milton Public Library (MPL) has secured Hadfield’s first book, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life On Earth, as the second in its popular One Book One Milton community read initiative.
The MPL’s One Book One Milton sees all of Milton invited to read the same book. It aims to connect and engage Miltonians through the shared experience of reading and discussing the chosen book as it relates to the community.
Hadfield’s first book, released in October 2013, offers readers stories from his life as an astronaut and shows people how to make the impossible a reality.
According to organizers, One Book One Milton participants unite to discuss the book’s contents, themes and relevance.
“I am particularly excited that Chris Hadfield’s book has been chosen as this year’s title as his mother, Eleanor Hadfield, was on the library board when I first came to MPL and I remember her talking with such excitement about Chris’s space-related adventures,” said MPL CEO and Chief Librarian Leslie Fitch. “We are thrilled to welcome Chris Hadfield to MPL, and also plan many community events and activities in celebration of his book in 2015.”
Hadfield — or Commander Hadfield as he became known to millions around the planet during his last trip to space in 2012-13 when he was commander of the International Space Station — began his journey at the age of nine years old, dreaming of going into space. His book is a compilation of how he got to the point in his life when he was in orbit, tweeting over Madagascar and playing guitar over the Arctic Ocean.
Hadfield will visit the MPL main branch at 1010 Main St. E. on Monday, May 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for a brief visit and book signing.
Other events will be announced in the coming months.
Hadfield’s second book, You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes, is number five on the Toronto Star’s non-fiction reading list, ‘The Books Canadians Were Buying This Week,’ released on Tuesday.
It’s a visual essay about the planet Earth, compiled from the thousands of shots he took while on the International Space Station. It was released last fall.
