Rick Mercer recently visited the Velodrome in Milton for his show that will air on television on Tuesday (Feb. 10)
The Rick Mercer Report on CBC, Tuesday at 8 p.m., features Mercer riding the track at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.
While at the track in Milton a few weeks ago, Olympic medalist Steve Bauer gave him tips on how to attack the two 42-degree angle banks on the track. He also discovered just how little the carbon-intensive bikes weigh.
He called the experience “amazing.”
“I was in a velodrome in London, ON many, many years ago, but this is an entirely different experience,” he told The Champion in a phone interview today. “I got right up to the red line and went around a few times.
“I thought, OK, I’ve made it around a few times, I think I should get down now,” he laughed, saying it was nerve-wracking.
“It’s always tricky when you think you know how to do something. I know how to ride a bike, but this is different. You can’t stop pedaling or you’ll get thrown off the bike and there’s no brakes on these bikes.”
As for comparing the track cycling to the many fun and sometimes frightening experiences he’s been challenged with over the years on his show, he said it’s difficult to compare segments.
Next week’s show also features Mercer in Ottawa, where he takes part in a world record attempt for the most snowmen built in an hour.
“It was a little safer, but less comfortable…it’s Ottawa at its coldest,” he joked, adding it was so cold it was difficult to make a snowball let alone a snowman.
