On those cold, windy winter days, the urge to leave a vehicle warming up in the driveway while one waits indoors is no doubt appealing.

But the urge for thieves to take advantage of this can be just as enticing.

That’s the message Halton police are trying to spread to Miltonians through their just launched Project ‘Warm Up’.

In light of recent ‘warm-up’ thefts in surrounding communities, police are taking preventative measures in town with daily morning patrols.

Starting today and running until March 1, Halton officers will be patrolling residential neighbourhoods in Milton from 5 to 8 a.m., looking for unoccupied and unlocked running vehicles.

If located, an officer will attend the residence to discuss the potential theft opportunity and also pass along some crime prevention tips.

The project is an educational awareness campaign to get people thinking about protecting themselves and proactively preventing crimes in their communities.
