Infidelity, family betrayal, teenage rebellion and forbidden love are just a few of the themes explored in the newest theatrical performance coming to the Milton Centre for the Arts.
On Thursday, Oct. 16, Pie in the Sky will make its official debut in the MinMaxx Hall. The story takes place in present-day Toronto and features four central characters experiencing challenges that are relatable, emotionally engaging and at times, humourous.
“It is a play which draws people in, then takes them on a journey, examining questions which I believe are important,” said the play’s writer and director, Douglas Beattie.
Natalia, the play’s main character, is torn between a promising career in her aunt’s jewellery business and an impulsive boyfriend who lands himself in jail.
Her aunt, Carmen, is going through her own personal crisis. She just found out her husband has been cheating on her. This makes her skeptical of all men and worried about Natalia. The person who gave her the news of her conniving husband was her beautiful daughter, Rosie, who now sees all men as pigs who are easily exploitable.
Finally, there’s Quino, the boyfriend and the reason behind the play’s whimsical name.
“He’s a character that has a desire for instant gratification and has a lot of odd crazy notions about how that can be achieved,” said Beattie.
These characters take the viewer through a dramatic yet humorous narrative, which analyzes the human response to deceit and betrayal and puts the battle between head and heart at the forefront.
“It offers no prescription, but the way that story works out, the audience can respond to the question not just intellectually but emotionally and empathetically,” said Beattie.
“It tells the truth.”
Rob Mackay, manager of cultural services for the Milton Centre for the Arts, said that the play is one that will appeal to an audience of all age groups.
“Whether you’re a seasoned theatre-goer or a newcomer, you will find something or someone in this story that you can relate to,” he said.
The October 16 show will hit the stage at 8 p.m.
There will also be performances Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 and 8 p.m.
