Milton Canadian Champion
Milton Tennis Club’s (MTC) InterCounty C team netted some high-stakes, high-pressure success at the Rexall Centre.

Winning three of four super tiebreakers at the home of the Canadian Open recently, the local squad cleared the final hurdle to the GTA mixed league championship — upstaging Bayview Village 4-2 for the title.

It was MTC’s first InterCounty triumph since 2008, when the ‘A’ team reigned supreme.

Following an opening-round loss, the 12-player squad reeled off four match victories — two in comeback fashion — to prevail.

Igniting the successful surge were Karen Jones and Richie Singh, who after being edged 6-4 in set one rallied for a 7-5 victory and then outlasted their opponents 10-5.

Showing an equal amount of stamina in the next round, Peter Grimwood and Regina Devine won 6-4, 5-7, 10-4. From there, Cassie Smith and Kathy Chappell sweep their Bayview Village rivals 7-5, 6-4.

This set the stage for the championship-clinching match, which fittingly enough came in a particularly dramatic tiebreaker.

Colin Carslake and Andreas Meyer battled back from a 6-3 loss to win 6-1 and then eke out an 11-9 nail-biter to seal the deal.

Captain Dave Adams and Saeed Ahmed dropped a day-ending tiebreaker to Bayview Village, while taking a tough opening-round defeat were Bertram Lewis and Mike Rozenveld.

Earning home-court advantage throughout the playoffs as West Division champs, MTC bested Pine Point, Lawrence Park and North York en route to the finals.

They prevailed in a ‘C’ division with roughly 60 teams.
