The Halton District School Board has appointed an interim trustee for Milton.
At its special board meeting on July 2, trustees affirmed their selection of Kim Graves.
She was officially sworn in as the board’s newest trustee partway through the meeting and took a seat at the board table even voting on the Pineland Public School boundary review.
In mid-May, the Halton board resolved to fill by appointment the vacancy created by the out-of-region move of Nancy MacNeill, trustee for Milton Wards 1, 6, 7 and 8.
Applications were accepted until June 18 with 13 received.
Ten applicants were interviewed by a team of trustees. A second session of interviews was required.
“The interview committee was impressed by the interest, qualifications and experience of all applicants to fill the trustee vacancy in Milton,” Kelly Amos, chair of the board, said in a press release.
“A number of the candidates distinguished themselves based on their understanding of public education, their involvement and contributions in Halton schools, and their involvement in and commitment to their community.”
Graves brings extensive experience from the post-secondary sector having spent more than a decade as an admissions officer and information analyst at the University of Toronto.
She currently teaches in the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology at Sheridan College and owns a small business offering robotics and computer programming classes for young students.
Graves’ volunteer work includes serving on the board of the Educational Computing Organization of Ontario, coaching varsity athletics, holding positions on parent council and volunteering in Halton District School Board classrooms.
“My goal as trustee will be to support the great work being done every day in our schools,” said Graves, who will be eligible to run for trustee in the October 27 municipal elections.
Milton has two of the board’s 11 trustee positions. Donna Danielli has the other.
