Computers, laptops, cell phones, televisions, monitors, print cartridges, iPods, radios and audio video equipment. Almost every household has one of those items, stashed away, collecting dust, or taking up space in the garage.
The Milton Champion will hold its second annual electronic waste collection fundraiser to support the United Way of Milton on Saturday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Staff from the community newspaper will be available to assist visitors with heavy items at the event, which will be held in the parking lot at 555 Industrial Dr.
Items that can be dropped off include: computer equipment, hard drives, digital cameras, cell, laptop or rechargeable batteries, cables, landline/cordless phones, pagers, projectors, VCRs, amplifiers, radios, speakers, typewriters and audio players/recorders.
According to Greentec, the company that will be recycling all the day’s collections, there are 50 million tones of E-waste generated each year and only 15 to 20 per cent is properly recycled. The remainder goes into landfills and incinerators.
Operating an 82,000 sq.-ft. recycling facility in Cambridge, Greentec products undergo a qualifying process to determine if they can be recycled, refurbished or reused. Last year, they recycled 13 million pounds of E-waste.
Greentec’s Think Recycle fundraising program works with schools and non-profit organizations, such as United Way, to generate funds by recycling E-waste.
Collected items are tested and rebates are provided to participants. Last year’s Champion event raised more than $1,500.
